Events that EPHA attended

Francesco attended a meeting of the Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (Alter-EU network) on “The EU Transparency, which way forward for NGOs?”, which was held in Brussels on 30 November 2005. A report is available in the members only area of this website.

Milena attended the conference on ¨Generation Excess II¨ on 1-2 December 2005 in Brussels. More information can be obtained at the following article: Transatlantic approaches to tackle obesity and diet-related disease.

Lara attended a roundtable organised by the British Medical Association, an EPHA member, about the Services Directive and Patient Mobility. On the same day, she also attended a debate organised by the BBC World Service on the future of the European Union.

Shivani attended a presentation organised by No Peace Without Justice on Female Genital Mutilation. She also attended the fourth meeting of the EU Platform on Diet, Physical activity and Health.

Anne attended a workshop in the European Parliament on Brain Science. Sponsored by Linda McAvan and Jules Maaten, it was part of the EU-funded project Meetings of Minds.

Events that EPHA organised

The EPHA Extraordinary General Assembly was held on 13 December in Brussels. The morning included a business meeting where EPHA members had the opportunity to input in issues such as priorities for 2006 and EPHA’s relations with Brussels-based think tanks. In the afternoon, EPHA organised a seminar on Science, Research and NGOs. Speakers included DG Research, the European Social Science Forum and the Faculty of Public Health which outlined the SPHERE project. The lively discussion with the members provided priorities for the EPHA Secretariat over the next few months. Urgent advocacy towards the European Parliament on the content and approach of the health theme within FP7. For the SPHERE project, a questionnaire for members to identify their needs and interests in public health research. The results of the questionnaire will be used to develop a project for the newly published call for proposal for the Science and Society budget line of DG Research (deadline March 2006).

EPHA co-organised with BEUC a Health and Consumer Intergroup addressing "Unhealthy food advertising: parents under pressure, obese children". It took place in Strasbourg on the 14 December 2005 The European Heart Network, an EPHA member, had the opportunity to express its concerns about the revision of the Television Without Frontiers Directive to 10 MEPs, Commission representatives and consultants. Meetings

Lara, Roxana and Tamsin met with DG SANCO officials in Luxembourg on 20 December 2005 to review progress on the EPHA project and discuss administrative and contractual details.

The meetings Lara attended during the first two weeks of December are: monthly meeting of the Civil Society Contact Group, a meeting organised by the European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA) with patient and consumers organisations and a meeting with some members of the staff and an external consultant to brainstorm about fund raising for EPHA.

Anne met with Paula Duarte Gaspar (DG Sanco - Health Strategy Unit) in order to discuss about the Health and Consumer Programme (2007-2013).

Agnese had meeting with Roxana and Lara in Brussels from 12 to 14 of December concerning on CEE project development. Agnese together with Roxana participated at the meeting organised by The Platform of European Social NGOs concerning on study visits of European organisations to new EU member states.

Presentations and trainings

The Secretariat held two internal trainings: a training on project development and writing skills and a training on communication and presentation tools.

Tamsin Rose made a presentation on recent EU policy trends to the EC law and Nordic Alcohol Policy network meeting in Oslo on 15 December 2005.
