In January 2004, EPHA started a project entitled “Building the wider health community across Europe” supported by the European Commission.

The aims of the project

The general aims of the project are to strengthen the participation of civil society in decision making in EU on public health issues and to raise the importance of public health in EU institutions.

The activities of the project are divided in 3 groups:

- Strengthening of the dialogue between civil society and EU on public health issues and to increase the participation of NGOs in EU level.

- Development of national platforms on public health in new EU member states.

- Rising importance on health and environment.

Development of national platforms on public health in new member states

From September 2005 till December 2006 EPHA will work on implementation of the second group of activities of the project - development the national platforms on public health in new member states.

The objectives to be achieved by the activities are:

- to strengthen the development of national platforms on public health within the 10 new member states;

- to increase the participation of NGOs at EU level;

- to inform about European public health policies and legislation processes in EU;

- to raise awareness on networking from local to European level.

The main activities are:

- training seminars and consultations in new member states;

- dissemination of a manual on networking and public health issues and translation to national languages (currently the manual is available in English, Slovenian, Polish and Latvian);

- creation of a directory of organisations.

The leading partner for this project is EPHA, and the regional partner for the implementation of the second group of activities is the Civic alliance - Latvia (CAL).
