ANPAA (the French National Association of prevention of alcoholism and addiction), an EPHA member, together with other French organisations working on alcohol and addictions, presented in June 2004 their point of view about several pieces of French legislation concerning alcohol.

The first piece of legislation was the French "white book" on alcohol, which aims to promote the consumption of wine in France and considers wine as food or a nutritional ingredient. ANPAA sustains that this is a very dangerous statement which will clearly put the health of citizens at risk.

Regarding the "Evin law" (French law which regulates the advertisement of alcohol amongst other things), ANPAA strongly opposes the intention of the government to introduce more flexible clauses in it. This may only produce a rise on the wine consumption. ANPAA will present a petition to keep the Evin law the way it is now.

Finally, ANPAA insists on the need of a new general law to clarify what exactly is scientific based knowledge on alcohol and other addictive subtsances (such as cannabis).
