New staff members
In May, two new staff members joined the EPHA Environment Network: Christian Farrar-Hockley and Monica Guarinoni.
Christian Farrar-Hockley is the new Policy and Information Officer. In the past, he used to work in the European Parliament researching environmental legislation for a British MEP, mainly dealing with air quality, the urban agenda and climate change files. He has also worked in the US with the Health Effects Institute as an analyst in the air quality arena. At EEN he will be responsible for coordination of EEN policy positions and campaigns, the development of media work on priority campaigns as well as advocacy work with EU institutions and relevant bodies.
Monica Guarinoni will assist in setting up the new office and in organising the logistics for EEN participation at the Green Week and the Budapest Ministerial Conference. She will also be monitoring the activities of the EU institutions and other relevant international organisations, providing regular updates to the EEN website and coordinating different inputs for the EEN Monthly Newsletter. Monica holds a degree in International and Diplomatic Studies. She wrote her degree thesis on Sustainable Development and Free Trade: relations and conflicts between the Multilateral Environmental Agreements and the Multilateral Trade System and has diverse work experience in Brussels, including a previous experience at EPHA on conference management.
Green Week 2004
The EPHA Environment Network will have a stand at Green Week 2004 taking place in Brussels from 1st to 4th June. During Green Week, EEN will also hold an Executive Committee meeting as well as a members Policy Meeting to finalise the preparation for the Budapest Ministerial Conference and the Healthy Planet Forum.
EEN response to the new Action Plan on Environment and Health
EEN has coordinated the response of some major European NGO networks to the draft of the new Action Plan on environment and health. The stakeholder letter, which has been sent to the Commissioners for Environment, Health & Consumer Protection and Research, highlights the Action Plan’s lack of concrete actions to improve the burden of disease linked to environmental factors.
International Colloquium at UNESCO
Genon Jensen participated at an International Colloquium at UNESCO on Cancer, Environment and Society in Paris. The conference was organised by the French Association for Research on Treatment Against Cancer A.R.T.A.C. . In particular, she spoke during the round table entitled Fight against environmental pollution around the world: the viewpoint of NGOs.
Conference on Environment and Social Transport Policies
On 19 May, Christian Farrar-Hockley and Monica Guarinoni attended a seminar organised by T&E. The seminar was about Uniting Environmental and Social Transport Policies and aimed at providing information on the links between transport and social exclusion as well as at considering the potential mutual benefits for society and the environment of environmentally responsible transport policies, with a focus on the specific example of pricing.
