The Royal Society for the Promotion of Health was founded in 1876 by a group of reformers including Florence Nightingale. We are the UK’s largest and oldest multidisciplinary membership organisation in the field of health. Our mission is to enable the widest range of health professionals to exchange ideas and best practice across professional boundaries. We are a knowledge and skills network and our activities include holding major conferences, publishing a peer-reviewed Journal, and campaigning on forthcoming legislation. We are also an examining body and 70 000 people each year take one of our health-related qualifications.

Our recent work has included lobbying the UK government on global water provision and the Framework Convention of Tobacco Control; holding national conferences on healthy flying, design of care homes and the nutritional needs of older people. From 2004 the main emphasis of our work will be campaigns on the health and wellbeing of younger people in the 10-16 age range.
