Scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health announced on 3 February that methyl mercury contamination of seafood can cause heart and brain damage in children.

The study, published in the February 2004 issue of the Journal of Pediatrics, found that brain signals controlling heart rates were significantly slower in children whose mothers had the most mercury in their systems during their pregnancies.
