The Socialist Group of MEPs is organising a conference on ’Financing the Millennium Development Goals’ to be held on Thursday 15th April 2004 in the European Parliament, Brussels.
The conference will explore progress towards the MDGs, where we are going wrong in our financing of the Goals, and what signals we need to send to governments in order to improve both the levels and delivery of financing and to achieve our aims.
The Conference will focus on three main themes:
Goal 6: Combating HIV/AIDS and other diseases; is it working?
Debt cancellation and achieving the MDGs: how can writing off debts make a real difference?
Goal 2: Achieving universal primary education; how can we get there?
Firstly the conference will look at how effectively the funding to fight HIV/AIDS is being spent, what progress is being made in fighting the disease, as well as considering the gender aspects of the pandemic.
Secondly, the conference will look at how debt cancellation could help achieve the MDGs, and indeed how we can increase pressure on Member States to act both under the current Irish and future EU Presidencies.
The event is being held at 11.00-16.00 on the 15th, the eve of the EU Development Ministers gather for an informal meeting to discuss development financing and progress towards the MDGs, making the event particularly timely.
The Conference will produce a ’Declaration’ to be presented to the Development Ministers.
There are limited places for the Conference: to register, please Eloise Todd and include a 5-line contribution for the Conference Declaration if you wish.
