The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) will be holding a conference to bring together stakeholders during the ongoing debate on the EU Chemicals reform, REACH, in the European Parliament and shortly before the European elections.

The conference, organised by EEB and ChemicalReaction, will provide a platform for members of civil society organisations, industry and governments to discuss and present their views to the Members of the EP. It aims to increase informed policy debate and to explore common ground - much-needed elements for a real reform that brings benefits for all.

The conference will take place on 23-25 March 2004 in Brussels. Participants are requested to register before 24 February 2004 (see attached document).

Background on REACH

After over 4 years of political and technical struggles the Commission made its proposals in October 2003 for a regulation on chemicals, called REACH, which intends to implement an overall reform of Europe’s chemicals policy.

It is the biggest and most important reform of EU health and environment protection. It has the potential to significantly increase protection and foster sustainable innovation, by:

- Charging industry to document and to make available safety information for 30.000 old chemicals;

- Ending the use of the worst chemicals, including chemicals that cause cancer, damage genetic material, interfere with hormone systems or accumulate in the environment or human bodies.
